Faith is a much confused word that we use to describe a belief we have, or a set of values that we adhere to. But genuine Christian faith is so much more than that; its a gift given to every Christian – the gift of faith! The gift to be able to believe for what we can’t yet see, a confidence that God us working for us when all around us seems against us.
Faith defined is ‘confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see’ (Hebrews 11:1). Nehemiah knew that it would take faith to rebuild the city walls. He was quietly confident that God was on his side, he saw beyond the ruins and called the people to action, to building, at the right time, and in the right way.
God is calling us to be a people of faith. Without it, it’s impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6). But with Faith, we not only please Him, but we can say to mountains – “Move”, (Matthew 17:20) or, in Nehemiah’s case, and ours, rebuild.
May God help us as we step out in faith. May He help us see beyond the ruins, and be a people of ACTION.
