Hope Over Convenience

Acts 3-4

In Acts 3 & 4, Peter and John were going about their usual business, on their way to the Temple, when they encountered a man who had been lame since birth. He was asking for money, and we’re told that he had been lame for over 40 years.

You can only imagine the pain he must have felt, and the frustration from the daily grind of putting aside his pride to ask for help to survive.

Peter and John had a choice; walk on by and crack on with their day, or put convenience aside and offer the man some hope. They chose hope over convenience. Only their offer to help and bring hope didn’t look like money, instead Peter spoke healing over the man in the name of Jesus, and sure enough he was healed!

How often do we choose hope over convenience? Not just in the times that we bump into someone asking for money in the streets. But in our families, at our places of education, in the staff room, in our relationships, or even on our social media feeds?

Bringing hope to someone will often inconvenience us in some way! Maybe it’s the time that it takes us, it’s our reputation, or there’s a cost; but when we choose to bring hope into people’s lives, that’s when we will be known as true followers of Jesus.

In the words of Jesus…

“Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” (John 13:35)

Questions:

  1. How are you taking the opportunity to share your life with people around you? (neighbours, colleagues, friends, family members etc.)
  2. Can you think of an example where you opted for convenience over hope? What made you make that choice, and how could things have gone differently?
  3. How can your Connect Group begin to look more outwardly focused? (maybe it’s through socials that you can invite friends and family along to, or you begin to meet somewhere like a coffee shop, or you start a new group open to all and based around a hobby like running, reading, quizzes…) Let us know what you come up with?!
