When you think of joy, you think of the good times; holidays, christmases, birthdays and those special moments in life like when your kids are born, when you graduate, when you get a promotion or when you move into your new home. Great moments, life-giving happy times, but all dependant upon circumstances. In other words, if things on the outside of our lives are going well, we’ve got the ‘joy’. But if things aren’t going well, I haven’t got the ‘joy’.
Christian joy is different to this; Christian joy is the very joy of Jesus, given to us: John 15:11 (NLT): “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy; yes, your joy will overflow”
Christian joy isn’t a joy ‘like’ Jesus’ joy, or a joy that resembles Jesus’ joy – its’ the same joy, its’ His joy, gifted to those who will trust Him and look to Him.
Jesus’ joy enabled Him to face the cross (see Hebrews 12:2). He lived His whole like under the shadow of Calvary. It’s great news today that that same joy can and will sustain us, His people as we face our ‘Calvary’, our ‘storms’, our ‘shadows’.
This advent, will you receive the joy of Jesus?
Wait for it; Expect it and make room for it.
