Out Of The Ordinary

Mark 1:16-20

Life isn’t always high days and holidays; as good as they are, there’s lots of life that can seem quite ordinary. We go to work, we eat, we sleep, we drive the kids to school, we walk the dog, we do the shopping, we check Instagram…you get the picture.

Life is sometimes ordinary. And with that, we can sometimes feel like we are doing something wrong, like there should be more, like if the Christian life is ‘life in all its fullness (John 10:10) then why do I have these ordinary days and moments? Our highly stimulated, ‘instant’ culture is almost wiring us internally to believe the lie that all of life should be one long adrenaline rush.

We read in Mark’s gospel how Jesus calls the first disciples Simon, Andrew, James and John (Mark 1:16-20). Four young ordinary blokes, doing an ordinary job, on an ordinary day! And along comes Jesus – to ordinary fellas, doing ordinary jobs on ordinary days.

It might be a while since we last mended any nets, but I can imagine we’ve all have a few ordinary days in the office, a few ordinary evenings sorting out the housework, a few ordinary weekends ferrying the kids from one club to the next!

The point is that Jesus comes to the ordinary. Ordinary doesn’t meant the absence of God as I have often been tempted to believe. He is walking along the shores of an ordinary Sea called Galilee, walking the ‘shores’ of ordinary streets and towns looking for ordinary people doing ordinary stuff. And when he comes, he calls us to the extra-ordinary. For these young fishermen, he called them out of the ordinary into the work of fishing for men’s souls! Whatever season of ordinariness we might find ourselves in at the moment, Jesus sees opportunity. Offer it to Him and let Him use our ordinariness for His glory and our good. Keep going.

Questions

  • How has God used ordinary situations in my life in the past?
  • What ordinary season might I be in now that God wants to use? How am I going to offer that to God? What am I going to do this week about that?
